Former Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar revealed how he ensured that a medal of excellence was named after the legendary Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi. The row came to the fore after it was decided that the India vs England Test series, which was earlier called the Pataudi Trophy, was renamed ‘Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy‘. Named originally to commemorate India’s 75 years in Test cricket in 2007, the Pataudi Trophy had become synonymous with the rivalry on English soil.

In an interview with Rev Sportz, Sachin revealed that he had spoken to the Pataudi family and had told them that he would do everything to keep his legacy alive. Thereafter, he said that he spoke to ICC Chairman Jay Shah and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and shared his thoughts. Subsequently, Sachin revealed that the decision to award the Pataudi medal of excellence to the winning captain was made in a second call.

“The Pataudi legacy has to be kept alive. The contribution of the Pataudi family to Indian cricket inspires us all. I spoke to the family and mentioned to them I will do all to keep the legacy alive. I also spoke to Mr Jay Shah and the ECB, and I shared my thoughts. Thereafter we did a second call and it was decided to award the Pataudi medal of excellence to the winning captain,” Sachin told the publication.

Further, Sachin said that the decision to retire the trophy was in the hands of the BCCI and the ECB. He said that he did all he could when he was informed of the decision. Earlier, Tendulkar had reportedly spoken to the BCCI and the ECB urging them to  find a way to preserve the Pataudi name within the context of the bilateral rivalry.

“You need to know the decision on retiring the trophy rested with the BCCI and the ECB and when I was communicated I did all I could to ensure the legacy was kept intact,” Tendulkar added.
