Benson Boone is looking back on his time on American Idol .
If you didn’t know, the 22-year-old “Beautiful Things” singer advanced to the Top 24 of season 19 in 2021, but despite receiving rave reviews from judges Katy Perry , Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie, he left the competition.
A few months after stepping away from the show, Benson signed a recording contract with Night Street Records, which was started by Imagine Dragons ‘ frontman Dan Reynolds . By 2024, he was opening for Taylor Swift and earned his first Grammy nomination.
While appearing on Scott Mills ‘ The Breakfast Show So, Benson said he spoke to Katy 40, “a few months ago,” where he got the impression she was happy to have quit Idol .
Read on to find out more…During his interview, Benson was asked if he believes Katy seems to have “discovered” him, given that she predicted he could win Idol and said that fans everywhere would one day “swoon over Benson Boone.”
“Do you want to know the real truth?” Benson replied. “I really think she’s very happy to be leaving the show.”
He recalled getting to “bump a little bit” with Katy at a recent awards show, adding: “She was really happy for me. Also really concerned about me. Like, I think she understands that when you’re starting to go through all this, like, there’s a lot of hate to come, a lot of people that want things from you, so she was more just checking up on you.”
Benson went on to say that Katy is “actually a lovely person,” adding, “She told me, she was like, ‘Leaving the show was, like, the best thing you’ve ever done. ‘ I think she just understands, I didn’t even know if I wanted to do music at that point.”
In another recent interview, Benson opened up about his relationship with his body, his lack of focus on his body “all the time,” and why he couldn’t be the “sex icon of the century.”
