A woman says her date “crashed out” after the male server made a bold gesture when he noticed the couple split the check .
In a video with over 371,000 views, New Jersey-based TikToker Brooke (@brookematar) bares her teeth in a selfie video as she recounts an awkward first date. She features Lorde’s song “Man of the Year” in the background, following a trend of women calling out disappointing behavior from exes.
The text on the screen reads: “He fell down and cursed at me because a waiter took my name off my credit card after he made me split the check and DM’d me, he wanted to take me on a real date.”
The caption asks, “How was it my fault?????”
Should women split the check on the first date?
In the comments, many women said the server’s direct message should give her a reality check about asking her to split the check. Some encouraged her to go out with the server.
“That was the universe showing him its power,” he suggested.
“So chivalry is not dead. It restored my faith in men,” wrote another.
“Girl, that’s your new man Wyd,” a third joked.
According to a 2021 survey shared with CBS News, 56% of American singles believe the check should be split on the first date. However, some women on the R/Dating subreddit believe that a male date asking to split the bill means he’s not that interested.
“Woman here. For me, it’s not about the money. It’s about the signal they send,” one Redditor stated.
“The funny thing is, when a man is extremely interested in you, the question of who pays for what will never come up or even become an issue,” wrote another.
“I feel like it’s different for everyone, but I’m looking for someone to form a traditional relationship with. Because of that, if he doesn’t want to pay, it probably won’t work,” added a third.
But some women said they happily offered to split the check with a new date.
“I always offer to split on the first date and every date after. Most of the time, guys clarify they’d rather pay, but I never mind if they don’t,” wrote one.
“I’d rather pay my share on a first date, even if he wants to do it as a way to show I don’t owe him anything for the rest of the night,” noted another.
Do women approve of the server’s bold move?
The Tiktoker shares that neither his original date nor the server message has a fairytale ending.
She revealed in a comment: “Unfortunately [the server] started sending me pictures of the street I lived on.”
Other commenters flagged the server’s creepy behavior.
“That would scare me. It’s not for the two of them,” said one commenter.
“This is too stalkerish for me, IDK,” wrote another.
“I would find that terrifying,” noted a third.
