David Duchovny is revealing how he dealt with character inconsistencies while filming The X-Files .

The 64-year-old actor played FBI agent Fox Mulder in the 1990s supernatural drama. According to David, having directors who didn’t fully understand the character was his main “pet peeve” while working on the show.

During Tuesday’s (July 8) episode of David ‘s Fail Better Podcast, he talked about fixing plot holes in the show.

Actress Emily Deschanel was a guest on the podcast episode. During the episode, David talked about how The X-Files compares to Emily Show Bones. At this point, both shows have a lot of drama per episode.

“Sometimes directors would come in and they knew they had a great script, and [since] this was on The X-Files, that could happen, you know? Like, ‘Holy S—, this is a great script,’ and they really wanted to kill him. These guys were dangerous,” David said during the podcast episode.

He went on to say that directors were often unfamiliar with previous episodes and would say, “A lot of times they’d say, ‘We’ve never seen Mulder like this before,’ and I’d say, ‘Yeah, like 10 other times we’ve seen Mulder like this before.’

The directors’ unfamiliarity with the characters often resulted in inconsistencies that David revealed he had to call the director directly to discuss.

“I remember halfway through the episode, I had this thought. I think I went up to [director] Chris Carter — who wrote that episode, I believe — and I said, ‘Mulder and Scully watched a building burn down in the pilot?’ I think Mulder was pretty cool about it, you know, it didn’t bother him,” David shared, referring to an episode from the series’ first season that focused on his character’s fear of fire.

If you didn’t know, David recently got married!
