SpaceX and Elon Musk have responded after one of SpaceX’s rockets exploded during a static fire test.
On Thursday, June 19, SpaceX’s Starship 36 was placed on the launch pad for a static fire test. During this test, the rocket’s engines were ignited to verify engine performance, check for leaks, and ensure that the rocket’s systems are functioning properly before an actual launch.
However, shortly after being fired, Starship 36 exploded violently on the Texas launch pad, and a clip quickly went viral on X.
SpaceX and Elon Musk Comment on Starship 36 Explosion
Shortly after the accident, Elon Musk joked that the massive explosion was “just a scratch” on the rocket. SpaceX, on the other hand, used X to explain the situation a little further.
“On Wednesday, June 18, at approximately 11:00 p.m., Starship preparing for its tenth flight test experienced a major anomaly during a test stand at Starbase,” they said in a post.
“A clear security area around the site was maintained throughout the operation, and all personnel are safe and accounted for. Our Starbase team is actively working to secure the test site and immediate surrounding area in conjunction with local authorities.”
SpaceX added: “There is no danger to residents in the surrounding communities, and we ask that individuals not attempt to approach the area while security operations continue.”
Starship 36 was scheduled for a full launch in late June, but has been delayed. There is a clear reason why these rockets are tested before launch, as this incident did not harm anyone despite the massive scale of the explosion.
