Shubman Gill falou sobre a decisão da equipe de fazer dele o novo número 4 nos testes após a aposentadoria de Virat Kohli
India cricket team captain Shubman Gill spilled the beans on the rationale behind the decision for him to bat at number 4. The Punjab batter, who earlier used to bat at number 3 in Tests, will now replace Virat Kohli at number 4 for India in Tests. The Men in Blue will enter a new era under the captaincy of Gill and will begin their new WTC cycle with the 1st Test against England on June 20.
How Gill was decided as India’s new number 4
Speaking at the pre-match press conference, captain Gill revealed that he had had a conversation with head coach Gautam Gambhir on playing at number 4 following Virat’s retirement. The former Indian captain took the world by surprise by announcing his abrupt decision to retire from Tests in May just before the England tour. Gill has a huge responsibility on his shoulders, given that he has to fill in the shoes of Kohli who was India’s best number 4 batter in Tests.
“After Virat bhai retired, me and Gautam Gambhir bhai had a discussion about me batting at that number,” Gill said.
On Wednesday, vice-captain Rishabh Pant confirmed that while Gill would bat at number 4, he would stick to coming out at number 5. Talking about who would be India’s number 3, a position occupied by Gill previously, Pant said that discussions were ongoing and that it was undecided as of now.
“Met Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma”
The series against England marks the first time in over a decade that India will be playing without Virat or Rohit Sharma. Gill revealed that he met the veteran duo during the IPL 2025 and said that Ro-Ko had shared their experiences of playing in England with him.
“I met both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the IPL, and they shared their experiences of England,” Gill added.
