The pacer, who decided that he will only take part in 3 Tests as a part of his workload management, will next be seen in action only in September. A report has now hinted at a headache for both the bowler and the team management in terms of deciding whether he will prioritize Tests over T20Is or if he will opt to play Asia Cup.

Will Bumrah pick Asia Cup over Tests?

Asia Cup will commence from September 9 and will conclude on September 29. Just days later, India will take on West Indies in the 1st Test at the Narendra Modi stadium in Ahmedabad from October 2-6. A BCCI source told news agency PTI that it would be a tricky decision for Bumrah to make as he cannot take part in the Test series if he plays in the Asia Cup. With the pacer preferring Tests over white-ball games and World Test Championship points at stake, it remains to be seen what route the bowler and the selectors will take.

“If Bumrah plays Asia Cup and suppose India plays the final, no way can he play against West Indies at Ahmedabad. Obviously the question arises, do you need Bumrah against West Indies or he plays Asia Cup after a month’s break and plays the two Tests against South Africa. That call, Ajit Agarkar and Gautam Gambhir will have to take,” the source said.

The source further said that Bumrah could play the series against New Zealand in January 2026 as a rehearsal for the T20 World Cup, hinting that he may not be needed for Asia Cup. Following the two-match series against West Indies, India will take on South Africa in November in another Test series at home.

“It will be a tricky call but Bumrah loves Test cricket and there are World Test Championship points at stake. As far as T20 is concerned, he can play the series against New Zealand in January, which will be a dress rehearsal for the T20 World Cup,” the source added.
