Former Indian cricketer WV Raman urged the team to reward a “consistent” Abhimanyu Easwaran with a chance in the England series. The West Bengal opener, who is a veteran in first-class cricket, is yet to make his debut for India. He has been a part of the quad previously but has never made it to the playing XI. Easwaran is a part of the 18-member squad for the five-match Test series against England.

“Reward Easwaran fully”

Speaking to Times of India, Raman said that Easwaran had been scoring runs for a consistent period of time. The ex-India coach felt that the West Bengal opener deserved to be rewarded with a spot in the playing XI for his consistency with the bat, and must be picked over Sudharsan and Nair. He claimed Easwaran was an automatic option for a seasoned opener but was never used when the slot was vacant.

“No, let’s not forget that Easwaran has been getting runs much higher than him over a long period of time. We have been having Easwaran as a part of the squad. We are not playing him. And that is again creating a lot of dilemma when the next selection comes up. We will have to try and reward him fully in the sense that there is no point picking him in the squad,” Raman said.

Easwaran has possibly been picked in the main squad as a back-up opener. He led India A in the recently concluded series against England Lions, in which he registered scores of 8, 68, 11 and 80. The Bengal batter has played 103 first-class matches in which he has amassed 7841 runs and averages 48.70. He was a part of the squad in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy as well but did not get a chance to make his debut.
