Amazon.com Inc. executives have had discussions about making a new investment in the anthropogenic PBC.

The Financial Times on Wednesday cited sources as saying the funding round could be worth billions of dollars. Amazon has already invested about $13.8 billion in Antropy, mostly in the form of convertible notes. A convertible note is a loan that the lender can optionally convert into equity.

Rumors of an Amazon investment in Antropy also surfaced before the companies announced a $4 billion funding round last November. At the time, they stated that Antropy would help Amazon Web Services Inc. with its AI chip development efforts. AWS also collaborates with rival OpenAI on go-to-market initiatives.

According to the Financial Times, Anthropic capped Amazon’s stake to keep it below 33%. Similar investment terms apply to AWS rival Google LLC. The latter company has invested over $3 billion in Anthropic across multiple funding rounds.

OpenAI Rival uses AWS and Google Cloud infrastructure to power its AI projects. Anthropic’s most capable AI model, Claude 4 Opus, debuted in May. It’s a so-called hybrid reasoning model that can respond to instructions instantly or spend additional time generating a more detailed response.

Upon its release, Claude 4 Opus set new records in several AI coding benchmarks. The model also outperforms its predecessors in other areas. According to Antrópico, Claude 4 Opus is particularly suited to tasks that require long-term retention of information.

The company delivers its AI models through a chatbot also called Claude and an application programming interface. According to the Financial Times, these offerings have an annualized revenue run rate of over $4 billion. This is up from $3 billion in May .

To meet the growing infrastructure requirements of its models, Anthropic partnered with AWS on an initiative called Project Rainier. It centers on a sprawling data center campus the cloud provider is currently building in New Carlisle, Indiana.

AWS originally planned to build 16 cloud facilities on-site at a cost of approximately $11 billion. The plan has since expanded to include 30 data centers. The campus is expected to draw 2.2 gigawatts of power, nearly double the amount allocated to the original Stargate Data Center .

AWS plans to equip its Indiana campus with tens of thousands of its Amazon EC2 Ultras. Each system includes four servers, each containing 16 AWS Trainium2 chips. Trainium2 is a custom AI accelerator that offers twice the performance and energy efficiency of its predecessor.

Anthropic isn’t the only LLM developer that could support a multi-billion-dollar funding round. In April, Bloomberg reported that Xai Holdings Corp. is seeking a $20 billion investment at a $120 billion valuation.
